State Board of Community Colleges approves new degree in leadership studies at Fayetteville Tech

WINSTON-SALEM – The State Board of Community Colleges on Aug. 17 approved an Associate in Applied Science degree in leadership studies, to be offered by Fayetteville Technical Community College.

Fayetteville Tech will be the first college in the NC Community College System to offer this degree, which was developed in consultation with the Special Warfare Education Group at Fort Bragg.

Enlisted soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg, and members of the North Carolina National Guard, will have the opportunity to earn a college degree, enhance their skills while serving, and obtain an educational foundation in preparation for life after the military. The program also will help traditional students who want to advance in their career. The program will begin this fall.

Meeting at Forsyth Technical Community College, the State Board also approved an allocation of $360,440 to support the second year of a pilot project between Pamlico Community College and Pamlico Correctional Institution to reduce recidivism.

The funding will cover personnel costs, equipment, instructional supplies and other expenses associated with providing offenders at the prison the opportunity to learn life skills leading to an associate’s degree.
