Monica Laney

I originally enrolled in South Piedmont Community College in 2011 after transferring from UNC Charlotte. At the time I was 20 years old, living on my own, and working two to three jobs at a time to support myself. The financial burden began to weigh on me over time. Trying to balance so much at that age, I felt at a loss as to what path I wanted for my future. I decided to take some time off from school and that time seems to have moved by in warp speed! I married my high school sweetheart and we welcomed two beautiful children into our family. My children gave me the inspiration to return to school because I want to be the best possible version of myself for them. I want to make something of myself, something that will make my kids proud of me.

Applying to SPCC for the second time was initially nerve-racking. My family is operating on a single income so that I may be a stay at home mother. More than that, it was intimidating returning to college after such a long period away, and I felt out of place. However, this all changed when I started the business administration program and met my counselors and program advisor, Ms. Fredrea Crawford-Smith. Additionally, the financial aid department at the school assisted me in obtaining the funds I needed for classes, as well as textbooks. This relieved a large weight from my shoulders. The staff at SPCC has been so helpful and genuine. They show true interest in my success as a student, and in me as a person. Their encouragement has truly made the utmost difference.

My grades are better now than they have ever been. I am not stressing over how to finance my education, and although my personal life took some adjustment, it all worked out more smoothly than I could ever imagined. My successful education at SPCC gives me confidence in my character. I cannot wait to graduate with my business administration degree and see the pride in the faces of my family members.
