Jennylee Spottswood
I began my college education in 2006 when I was an eighteen-year-old. After the first semester, I dropped out due to pregnancy. I got married and decided to stay at home with my son. Over the next few years, I worked several part-time jobs and had two more children. I always thought about going back to school, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do or how we could afford it.
Once my youngest children entered Kindergarten, I started working at a preschool and loved it! I wanted to know the best practice to use in my classroom so I could be an effective teacher for my students and a valuable resource to their parents. On my oldest son’s 10th birthday, I applied to Johnston Community College.
Since I enrolled, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA while juggling the demands of a family and working. I received two scholarships and was inducted into the National Technical Honor Society in 2018. I will graduate with my Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education in May 2020. I credit my academic success to truly finding my passion, a great support system from my family, friends, and the JCC community.
